Visiting Louvre Museum in Paris, France

The Louvre Museum in France, housed in the former seat of French royalty (Palais du Louvre), is a massive maze of collections from diverse artistic and cultural worlds. A French flag proudly waves atop the castle. At its main entrance lies a glass pyramid created by I.M. Pei in 1989, which also serves as the entrance to the reception hall beneath it. It is the globe's most visited museum, with more than 20,000 visitors in a day.

There are around 35,000 artwork pieces and eight thematic departments. There are permanent collections such as the masterpieces of Rubens, Da Vinci, and Delacroix and Egyptian, Islamic and Greek art collections, as well as temporary exhibits that put the spotlight on specific artists or movements. There are guided tours available for both individuals and groups to make the visit to the Louvre a less daunting task for its guests.

Visitors overwhelmed by the numerous artworks can take a breather at any of the Louvre's restaurants or cafes. There is also a bookshop underneath the pyramid which sells books and gifts. For the shopaholics, the Caroussel de Louvre is a shopping haven within the Louvre Palace that has all the offerings of an upscale mall. The Museum is located in the 1st arrondissement on the right bank of the Seine. There are several entrances, with the Pyramid entrance being the most famous, and, as such, has the longest queues for visitors. Visitors may also want to try other entrances with shorter queues such as those in the Porte des Lions, and Galerie du Carousel.

A Brief History of the Louvre

The Louvre is one of Paris's most famous landmarks and attracts millions of people each year. Built by Phillip II, now only small remnants of the original building still exist in the crypt of the current palace. The general consensus is that world famous Louvre was constructed on an existing tower in the same area of Paris although it is not know whether it was the first building to be built in that area.

During the Middle Ages The Louvre Palace was constantly adjusted and rebuilt - the fort was converted into a residence and redecorated in the style of the renaissance. Francis I was also the King who made the Louvre the home of Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa. In 1682, Louis X1V decided to live in Versailles and the Louvre was used as a residence for French artists.

Paris Musuem

In the 18th century, The Louvre was turned into an exhibition of the royal collections after high public demand under Louis XV. They were displayed to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays and included Andrea del Sarto's Charity and works by Raphael. This later became a policy of Louis XVI until the French Revolution.
In 1791, the newly formed French assembly made the Louvre "a place for bringing together monuments of all the sciences and arts" and in 1792 the royal collection became national property.

A Brief History of the Louvre

The museum officially opened in 1793 on the 10th August. This was to commemorate the first anniversary of the old monarchy's demise. The exhibits contained paintings and objects from the royal collection and the church. The Republic also added pieces such as Laocoön and His Sons and the Apollo Belvedere. These were seized by France's revolutionary armies.

When the French Second Republic was created in 1848, the government paid two million francs to repair the existing museum and to complete Galerie d'Apollon, the Salon Carré, and the Grande Galerie.

The museum was cleared entirely in WWII just before Hitler's armies invaded Paris until its liberation in 1945. The Musée du Louvre soon became home to the World's most important collections of Art and ancient artefacts with 380,000 objects and displays and attracts over 15000 visitors per day. It also became famous worldwide as the alleged final resting place of Mary Magdalene in the film The Da Vinci Code

Musee Du Louvre, Paris - Why is the Mona Lisa Hanging There?

Why does the Musee Du Louvre, Paris, house the most famous painting in the world when it was painted in Italy by an Italian artist?

There is nothing unusual about works of art being shifted around the world and the Louvre contains a goodly selection of other Italian paintings - by Mantegna, Bellini, Caravaggio and Titian.

Paris Musuem

There is no doubt as to the Italian origins of this masterpiece. Painted in Florence by the Renaissance polymath Leonardo da Vinci, it is sometimes also known by its Italian name "La Gioconda". It is thought to be a painting of Lisa del Giocondo, a member of the Gherardini family who married Francesco del Giocondo, a wealthy Florentine silk merchant. So there is not much mystery as to the origins of the names "La Gioconda" or the "Lisa" part of the painting's name. As to the "Mona" part, this is doubtless a corruption of the Italian "Ma Donna", meaning "My Lady".

Musee Du Louvre, Paris - Why is the Mona Lisa Hanging There?

Yet, in the eyes of many, there is a mysterious and non-specific air to the painting. The most well-known adjective used to describe the painting is "enigmatic". The background to the painting is not particularly relevant to Italy, it consisting of a fictitious landscape with mountains in the background. Where are there signs of Italian civilisation? There is but a small bridge and some winding paths to behold.

The Mona Lisa is located in the Musee Du Louvre chiefly because Leonardo took the painting to France with him in 1516 and it eventual wound up in the Louvre after the French Revolution.

A hundred years ago, in August 1911 to be precise, the Mona Lisa was subject to an unsuccessful episode of repatriation when it was stolen by Louvre worker Vincenzo Peruggia. The burglar hid in a broom cupboard till closing time and walked out with the painting under his coat. His motive? Rather like a devotee of the Elgin marbles arguing that they should be returned to Greece, he believed the painting should be returned to its country of origin. Peruggia blew his cover two years later by trying to sell it on to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. After being exhibited all over Italy, the Mona Lisa was returned to the Louvre in 1913, and is still owned by the French Government. Peruggia got off lightly with a six month jail term.

Musee Du Louvre in Paris Is the Most Famous Museum in the World

The Musee du Louvre is the most renowned museum throughout the world and though it's usually thought of as simply the museum in Paris that holds the Mona Lisa painting, there's such a lot more to be discovered.

Yet, even a couple of hours at this unbelievable museum isn't anywhere close to enough time to experience the collections on offer, yet alone the rich architecture with the history of the Louvre from fortress through to palace and its grandeur that's portrayed everywhere you turn.

Paris Musuem

Within the Louvre museum there are the permanent collections on show that are categorized in several departments of the Louvre located throughout the Louvre Palace, yet you can find that not all of the rooms will always be open. This could be due to renovations or certain sections could also be closed on specific days, however there are always notices up detailing the closures and you can additionally find out in advance by viewing their web site on-line.

Musee Du Louvre in Paris Is the Most Famous Museum in the World

The Musee du Louvre museum has an impressive collection that covers Western art from the medieval era through to around the middle of the 1800s together with formative works from the civilisations of the ancient world and works of Islamic art. However, even the history of the Musee du Louvre from when it started back within the 1700s is just as fascinating and there's such a lot to find out, with exhibitions that details the history of the Louvre, the original Tuileries Palace and the Tuileries Gardens, a number of which were designed by Andre Le Notre.

It all started within the Middle Ages near the end of the twelfth century throughout the reign of King Philippe Auguste that the French monarchy were growing in their power quite dramatically, and at that point, Paris was the biggest city in Europe.

Because of this, it was decided that a fortress was required to be created to guard the city and the monarchy, with construction of the fortress and keep beginning in 1190 on a strategic position at the west side of Paris along the river Seine.

Named the Louvre, it was not designed as a royal residence, as it was designed as an arsenal that had defensive towers, that flanked narrow gates, a moat, round bastions at the corners and within the centre of the defensive structure was an extremely large keep known as the Grosse Tour that stood around 15m across and 30m high.

By the middle of the fourteenth century the capital city of Paris had gone well beyond the original walls of the Louvre fortress and thus new defences were deemed necessary, particularly with the onset of the Hundred Year War, and therefore this original fortress lost its purpose.

Then, in 1791 it had been determined that The Louvre and the Tuileries would be the national palace for the king, but was additionally to house the treasures and monuments of the arts, and so, in 1793, the Musee du Louvre was born.

When you look at the history of the Musee du Louvre, Vivant Denon, an archaeologist as well as artist, was influential among the Louvre and with the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, however it was Jean-Francois Champollion, who really created a significant difference to this section. He had a fascination with Egypt, was the founder of scientific Egyptology and was the primary person to decipher hieroglyphics, and after setting up a museum in Italy, he became the new curator for this section at the Louvre once he convinced King Charles X to buy 3 different collections of Egyptian antiquities.

Today, the painting assortment at The Louvre ranges from the thirteenth century up till 1848 and other paintings that were dated after this were transferred to another spectacular museum in Paris, called the Musee d'Orsay, that is why you'll usually hear individuals say that the Musee d'Orsay starts where The Louvre finishes.

You will be able to discover the Italian and Spanish paintings that occupy the entire ground floor of the Denon wing of the Louvre, and incredibly the whole second floor of the Cour Carree and the Richelieu wing are filled with French and Northern paintings galleries.

However, you'll additionally observe the numerous different styles of decoration that cover the Louvre Palace just like the Romanelli ceilings in the apartments of Anne of Austria, and some of the highlights you'll see, include the Bathsheba at her bath by Rembrandt, Crucifixion by Giovanni, Liberty leading the people by Eugene Delacroix and of course the famous Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci.

Plus there are always completely different temporary exhibitions held at different times of the year, and these are themed exhibitions on specific subjects. And some of the exhibitions that have taken place within the past include modern art, the Louvre throughout world war II, the La Caze collection, that was the foremost fabulous bequest within the entire history of the Louvre Museum, and plenty of others.

So as you'll no doubt tell, this is a wonderful French museum with its rich collections that are continuously improving, and it's no wonder that this is often the most visited museum within the world and positively the most famous of all museums in Paris.

But there are also cafes and restaurants at the Louvre museum, so if you have the time whilst you are on holiday in Paris, then you could always make a whole day out at this spectacular former fortress turned palace and museum, along with a visit to the Tuileries Gardens.

The Louvre

The Louvre is the most famous art museum in the world. It also has the most number of visitors per year. It is home to many great works of art that are historically significant in Western culture. It was originally built as a royal palace for King Philipp II. The architecture is similar to the French Renaissance style of the famous architect Pierre Lescot. Its use as a place to showcase art started at around the time of French Revolution. The idea began from the Luxembourg Palace in Paris which was then followed by the Louvre.

The Louvre originally collected the works or Leonardo da Vinci and Andrea del Sarto. Extensions of the site were commissioned as the continued expansion of the Louvre necessitated it. As France grew in power and stature in the 17th century, it was able to acquire increasing holdings. Major works from Dutch artists were acquired for display in the museum. Today, the collection is added by gifts from citizens.

Paris Musuem

One of the primary goals of the Louvre is to preserve and protect French art treasures. This includes collections from the early part of its history up to recent acquisitions to this day. They seek to give access to as large amount of people as possible to the beauty of all these works. The museum loans different works of art to different institutions all over the world too.

The Louvre

It has partnerships with other major art institutions. It was recently announced that a Louvre museum will be constructed in Abu Dhabi and should be completed in 2012. It will house work from different French museums, including those from the Louvre as well.

The Louvre Pyramid is the main entrance of the museum. The French president Francois Mitterrand hired the Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei to construct the glass pyramid. This was one of the first renovations from the Grand Louvre Project.

The Louvre houses some of the finest art collections in the world. There are eight departments, which are as follows: Paintings, Prints and Drawings, Decorative Arts, Sculptures, Islamic Art, Egyptian Antiquities, Greek and Roman Antiquities and Near Eastern Antiquities.

The museum has a collection of almost 12,000 paintings. The Mona Lisa is one of the more prominent pieces found in the museum. It is a 16th century portrait painted by Leonardo da Vinci. It is considered as one of the most famous paintings in the world. The picture is of an expressionless woman, which has been the subject of countless debates and arguments. The painting has undergone a number of conservation treatments leading to its' relatively excellent state.

Other exhibits include sculptures, such as the Venus de Milo. Also known as the Aphrodite of Milos, it is an ancient Greek statue depicting Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love and Beauty. It is made of marble with the absence or arms from the sculpture being quite notable.

Aside from the aforementioned exhibits, others include engravings, drawings, books and archeology. To keep up with the times, the Louvre continually expands and develops new areas in the museum.

The Louvre Museum

The Louvre Museum. Heaven? Elysium? A historical, cultural and artistic paradise? A genius's final resting place? All of them combined? Perhaps. The best and the most famous museum of the world, the Louvre attracts millions of visitors to its hallowed precincts every year, year after year.

History

Paris Musuem

Ensconced in the heart of Paris near the Seine, the Louvre is a museum that was originally a palace, which was inhabited by French monarchs. After the incarceration of Louis XVI, the artifacts of the Louvre that belonged to the royal family, became a property of France. The palace became a repository in the year 1793 AD. But the museum had several architectural defects then. Napoleon added to the museum's collections through his conquests. However, many artifacts had to be returned to their original owners when Napoleon was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo.

The Louvre Museum

Treasures

More 'gems and jewels' were added to and subtracted from the Louvre over the next couple of centuries according to whether France gained or lost political leverage. Today, the Louvre boasts of over 380,000 objects. The Louvre showcases some 35,000 artistic works over an area of 60, 600 square meters. Each of the exhibits of the Louvre is a chef d'oeuvre. The glass Pyramid and the Inverted Pyramid of the Louvre attract thousands of tourists with their dazzling symmetry. The Tuileries Gardens border the Louvre in a way a sparkling crown lines the head of a great ruler.

What It Is All About

You must see the Louvre to understand it. Reading a description of the Louvre may give you an idea about the museum but you will understand how spectacular it is only if you visit it. The Louvre is overwhelming. The museum is a microcosm of the glories of the human race. Whether it is art or sculpture, something religious or secular, you will be able to see it all in the realms of the Louvre.

The Ancient and the Modern

Currently, the Louvre is home to a large shopping arcade that is filled with scintillating stores, which sell perfumes, accessories, miniatures, keepsakes, and apparel. Tourists throng the stores and restaurants present in the premises of the Louvre to shop, to window-shop, to eat, and to relax. However, you will feel rather strange if you walk into any of these stores or eateries, especially after you have just emerged from the Denon or any of the other wings of the Louvre. The stark contrast between the ancient and the modern will hit you straight in the face.

The Spirit

Many say that entering the Louvre is like crossing the gates of heaven into the abode of the gods. You will feel much the same way when you visit this timeless museum. Every step that you take in the Louvre, in its corridors and passages, before its renowned masterpieces, statues, paintings and caryatids; every breath that you breathe while treading its floors; every time you take a photograph; every time you turn your head to admire an exhibit; you'll feel as if you're walking through an ageless and magical land, staring at eternity as it unfolds before your eyes.

Greatest Exhibits

Salle 6, the large hall just off the Grande Gallery naturally has the maximum number of visitors as the Mona Lisa resides there. La Giaconda enthralls all her visitors with her mystic smile, she has always enchanted everyone, except perhaps her creator. Even if she is superior to everybody, she has to be inferior to the genius from whose paintbrush she had sprung, Leonardo Da Vinci. Da Vinci's spirit pervades Louvre. You can almost feel the painter-cum-inventor breathing when you visit Salle 6 where Mona Lisa lives, walk down the Grande Gallery, which is adorned by the much revered Madonna of the Rocks, Virgin and Child with St. Anne, and St. John the Baptist, three of Da Vinci's most renowned paintings.

Besides, the Mona Lisa, the Venus De Milo and the Winged Victory are the other most popular attractions of the repository. Both these sculptures are huge and impressive and epitomize the best of the Greco-Roman sculptural styles. These statues bear testimony to the grandeur of the Greek and Roman civilizations, both of which have left their indelible mark on European culture and civilization.

The Egyptian, Islamic and the Chinese exhibits of the Louvre will take your breath away.

A Tribute...

Louvre is an experience. The spirit of the museum is all-encompassing and haunting. The Louvre may be located in Paris but it's much more than Paris. It's an altogether different world, a world of its own, a world that's ancient. The Louvre transports you back to a different era, each time you visit it. The yellowed parchments of history come alive when you visit the museum.

The Louvre is not merely a collection of exhibits, paintings, sculptures and artifacts. It is mankind's tribute to mankind - an embodiment of the power of the human race, the creative spirit of humans and the limitless glory of the human soul.

Brief History and Information - The Louvre Museum in Paris

No visit to Paris is complete without at least one day spent in the famous labyrinth of a museum in central Paris. Enjoy a mix of architectural appreciation and artistic admiration as you stroll through the halls and courtyard of one of the most famous art museums in the world.

The Louvre Museum is more than simply an art museum. Originally built as a castle on the city's western edge, the city has expanded around the Louvre in modern times. While Philippe Auguste was in power in France from 11-80 to 1223, Paris was the largest city in Europe. The Louvre was originally constructed to protect the border of the city, from the edge of the Seine River. During Louis XIV's reign, the fortress was expanded and during the reign of Henri II and his sons, plans were made to extend the fortress all the way to the Tuileries palace 500 meters west of the Louvre. For this reason the currently standing Grande Galerie was built. While Louis XIII and Louis XIV were in power, the fortress was expanded further, but following the building of Versailles, the Louvre of Paris was temporarily forgotten.

Paris Musuem

Along with the French Revolution came the rebirth of the Louvre as a gallery. Louis XVI lived briefly in the Tuileries palace, and Charles I's rule initiated sculpture galleries, and eventually other exhibition spaces. In 1882, the Tuileries palace was destroyed and the remains are what is seen as the modern Louvre in Paris. Art galleries began to expand across the old fortress until they had completely taken over, as can be seen now. In 1793, it was deemed a museum for the public.

French, 1894-1986 Jacques Henri Lartigue (June 13, 1894 - September 12, 1986) was a French photographer and painter. Born in Courbevoie (a city outside of Paris), he is most famous for his stunning photos of automobile races, planes and fashionable Parisian women from the turn of the century. He also photographed many famous sporting events, including automobile races such as the Coupe Coupe Gordon Bennett and the French Grand Prix, early flights by aviation pioneers including Gabriel Voisin, Louis Blériot, and Roland Garros, and tennis players such as Suzanne Lenglen at the French Open tennis championships. The Louvre Art Museum - Paris, France

Located in Paris, the Louvre has been one of the most famous and most visited museums in the world. Placed on the Right Bank in the First Arrondissement, the Louvre was built in an area between the Seine River and the Rue de Rivoli. This building was originally used as a fortress, and later was used to display art and transformed into a museum.

The museum was formally opened in 1750, and much of the building was used as a gallery to showcase artist's works. It allowed all common people from within France and abroad to view the gallery. Entrance to the museum in the form of a combined ticket (which grants admission to all permanent collections as well as any temporary exhibits) is 13 euros.

The Louvre Museum in Paris France

The Louvre was originally a royal palace that was built on the site of an old castle and added to by different Kings, but with the construction of Chateau de Versailles it became obsolete and was then turned into a museum back in the 1700's.

It was first given the name Musee Central des Arts, then it changed to the Musee Napoleon and from that changed its name again to the official title of Musee du Louvre, which is what it has been known as ever since, although is affectionately known as just The Louvre.

Paris Musuem

Being one of the oldest and largest museums, it is home to probably the most well-known painting in the world, the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci and has become the most famous and most visited art museum in the world with over 8 million visitors coming here every year.

The Louvre Museum in Paris France

In an easily accessible part of Paris located by the River Seine, The Louvre once again incorporates the beautiful Carrousel and the Tuileries Gardens that are a great place for a casual stroll, yet this means that it brings the museum outside with sculptures and statues from artists such as Aristide Maillol and Auguste Rodin.

Most people now find The Louvre recognisable by the large glass pyramid that is located in the central courtyard and this serves as the main entrance to this awe inspiring Paris museum, which is in alignment with the Champs-Elysees axis, but did you realise that it was only actually built in 1989! And it is from this point that tourists can access different temporary displays, the fascinating history of this world famous museum, along with the bookshop, Le Cafe Marly restaurant, etc, but also outside there is an equestrian statue of King Louis XIV.

Even if you are not a fan of art, you will still thoroughly enjoy your time at The Louvre, as it houses some very impressive collections, which include Egyptian, Roman and Greek artefacts, sculptures and other works of art that date back to the Middle Ages, right through to around 1850.

Realistically you need at least a day, or even more at The Louvre, as only allocating a few hours does not do the place justice, but it is extremely worthwhile obtaining a map of the place, as it is so vast you could end up missing exhibits you specifically wanted to see, especially if you have time restraints, yet do not be concerned that the exhibits are not all on one level as there are lifts to make them accessible to wheelchair users.

Obviously there is an entrance fee, but on the first Sunday of the month this and many other museums in Paris are completely free, however it also gets extremely busy, but arriving early and making a bee-line for famous exhibits like Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People, will ensure you get a good view before they get too crowded!

Yet when you need a well earned rest or need to refuel your body, then there is an enormous different choice of food on offer in the cafeterias and restaurants and incredibly, there are six different cafes and restaurants to choose from, that are open every day except for a Tuesday when the whole museum is also closed.

Whilst visiting The Louvre, do venture into the bookstore located in the Hall Napoleon under the glass pyramid and along with visitors guides available in more than ten different languages, it also stocks the largest selection of books on art history in France, plus has numerous other books, a children's section and even sells prints made up from the museums collection, with absolute thousands to choose from.

Now we quickly mentioned visitors guides, and if you are not fluent in the French language, then we would say that this is a must to fully appreciate the place, as many of the exhibit descriptions are not in any other language bar French, alternatively, if you plan your visit to the Musee du Louvre well in advance, you can have a guided tour that lasts about 2 hours and takes you round the most well known exhibits, leaving you to wander around the rest of this museum at your own leisure afterwards.

There will definitely be something of interest for everyone at The Louvre, including children, and it certainly lives up to its reputation of the best museum to visit when in Paris, but do bear in mind that it is closed every Tuesday and on national holidays, but is open from 9am to 6pm every other day and also has a late night opening on a Wednesday until 10pm.

The Louvre Museum in Paris France Caravaggio ( 1571 - 1610) Part One - paintings 1593 to 1600 Video Clips. Duration : 4.95 Mins.

Caravaggio was an Italian baroque painter who was the best exemplar of naturalistic painting in the early 17th century. His use of models from the lower classes of society in his early secular works and later religious compositions appealed to the Counter Reformation taste for realism, simplicity, and piety in art. Equally important is his introduction of dramatic light-and-dark effects - termed chiaroscuro - into his works. Originally named Michelangelo Merisi, Caravaggio was born September 28, 1573, in the Lombardy hill town of Caravaggio, from which his professional name is derived. He may have spent four years as apprentice to Simone Peterzano in Milan before going to Rome in 1593, where he entered the employ of the Mannerist painter Giuseppe Cesari, also known as the Cavaliere d'Arpino, for whom he executed fruit and flower pieces (now lost). Among his best-known early works are genre paintings (scenes from everyday life) with young men - for example, The Musicians (1591?-1592, Metropolitan Museum, New York City) - which were done for his first important patron, Cardinal Francesco del Monte. Scenes such as the Fortune Teller (1594, versions in the Louvre, Paris, and the Museo Capitolino, Rome) were especially appealing to the artist's followers. Caravaggio's mature manner commenced about 1600 with the commission to decorate the Contarelli Chapel in San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome with three scenes of the life of Saint Matthew. The Calling of Saint Matthew (1599?-1600 ...
