A French flag proudly waves atop the castle. At its main entrance lies a glass pyramid created by I.M. Pei in 1989, which also serves as the entrance to the reception hall beneath it. Top 5 Reasons to Visit France

With over 80 million tourists a year, France is the most visited country in the world. Here are the top five reasons why people from all over the world visit France - the very same reasons you should be planning your own French holidays, too.

1. The Most Romantic Place on Earth

Paris Musuem

France arguably has more romantic spots than anywhere else in the world. These include stunning gardens such as the world-famous gardens of Versailles, where kings and queens once walked, the gardens of Latour-Marliac in Giverny, which provided the inspiration for one of Claude Monet's most famous paintings and the Loire Valley, which, with all its golden sunflowers, is a huge garden in itself - all of which are perfect places for a stroll with your loved one. There are also many fairy tale castles for you to tour, such as the Chateau de Chambord, Cheverny Castle and Fontainebleau Castle and you can even spend the night in one if you like.

Top 5 Reasons to Visit France

Of course, you should also spend some time in Paris when you visit France on a romantic getaway. After all, the city is synonymous with romance. Savor the breathtaking views from the top of the Eiffel Tower, walk hand in hand along the Seine - while stealing a French kiss or two, or simply sit side by side in a small cafe and watch the city go by.

2. Gourmet Dining

It is a well-known fact that French cuisine is one of the world's most popular cuisines, as well as one of the most refined. True, you can easily find a French restaurant in many corners of the world, but nothing still compares to eating fois gras, coq au vin, ratatouille, bouillabaisse, souffle, eclairs or ganache in one of the best restaurants in France. For a truly gourmet dining experience, reserve a table at one of the country's Michelin three-starred restaurants, like Guy Savoy, Le Meurice or Plaza Athenee.

Be sure to order wine with your meal, since France also produces the best wines - whether red, white, or sparkling wines. You can also visit various wine estates and cellars during your French holidays in the regions of Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne so you can see how wines are made while treating your tastebuds to a wine-tasting escapade. And if you like cognac, you should try it at the town where it originated.

3. World-Class Art Museums

France is home to the Louvre, the world's most famous museum, which, in turn, is home to over 30,000 priceless works of art. Its collection of paintings is the most impressive, containing masterpieces by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Caravaggio and Rembrandt, although it also has various sculptures and artifacts from ancient Egypt and Greece. Aside from the Louvre, you should also drop by the Musee d'Orsay, which houses Monet and Renoir masterpieces among others, as well as the Musée National d'Art Moderne at the Centre Georges Pompidou, when you visit France. You can view exceptional works of art at the Palace of Versailles, too, and in many galleries outside Paris such as the Musee d'Unterlinden in Colmar.

4. Shopping

For the ultimate shopping experience, you should definitely come visit France. You will find many fashionable shops on the streets of Paris, particularly world-famous boutiques selling the best and latest in shoes, bags and clothes and fashion accessories. The specialty food shops are just as popular, such as the pastry and cheese shops, although you won't be able to bring these home as souvenirs. For more unique finds and better bargains, don't be afraid to try the Saint Ouen Flea Market and other flea markets in Paris and other cities, though you should be mindful to come early and be on guard against pickpockets.

5. Beautiful Beaches

Many tourists visit France for its beaches, and why not, when its beaches offer fine sands, sparkling Mediterranean waters, spectacular scenery and great facilities? Most of the fine beaches in France can be found on the Cote d'Azur or the French Riviera, particularly near the cities of Cannes and Nice, such as the St. Tropez Beach and the Villefranche sur Mer, although you can also find great beaches on the coasts of Brittany and Normandy, as well as on the Atlantic coast, like Biarritz.

Famous Places in France - Top Ten

There are so many famous places in France, that it would be impossible to see them all in one trip. If this is your first visit to France, the options can seem overwhelming...where do you go? Which are the best places to see?

Here is a snapshot of some of the most famous places in France that you, or your family and friends might like to visit - depending on your interests, whether this is historical sites, museums, areas of natural beauty or food and wine.

Paris Musuem

If you are spending a couple of weeks here you could easily visit most of the places listed below. It will be a whirlwind trip, but is certainly doable and you will have many wonderful memories.

Famous Places in France - Top Ten

Some of the most famous places in France are in Paris!

1. La Tour Eiffel
The Eiffel Tower, built in 1889 by Gustave Eiffel for the Universal Exposition, is without a doubt one of the most popular tourist attractions in France.

It's amazing to think that the Eiffel Tower was, for a time, seen as an eyesore and even ugly; it was almost knocked down in 1909.

2. Musée du Louvre
The Louvre museum, once a royal palace, is now one of the most well known art museums in the world, featuring paintings such as the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, as well as spectacular artworks by Michelangelo, Raphael and, Botticelli.

3. Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris
Next in line is the beautiful Gothic cathedral, Notre Dame, built from the around 1163 to 1345, visited by more than 12 million people a year, and one of the most famous french monuments.

4. Arc du Triomphe
The Arc de Triomphe and magnificent Ave des Champs-Elysées, are spectacular to see. The Arc was commissioned by Napoloeon to commemorate the victories of his armies; the tomb of France's Unknown Soldier lies here, and every evening a memorial flame is lit.

5. Versailles
If you can, try and visit the Palace of Versailles, built during the reign of Louis XIV - known as the Sun King (Roi Soleil) to display his wealth and power of the monarchy at that time. Versailles can be easily reached as a day trip from Paris. It is without question, absolutely spectacular, and one of the most dazzling things you will probably every see.

6. Mont St Michel
Mont St Michel is one of the most recognisable landmarks in France, located just off the coast of Normandy. In fact, it is the next most visited site after Paris!

Its hard not to be awed by the sight of Mont St Michel, with its Gothic-style Benedictine Abbey perched high above a rocky outcrop.

7. Mont Blanc
Mont Blanc (meaning white mountain in French) is the highest mountain in the Alps, lying between Italy and France. Chamonix is here, the site of the first Winter Olympics, and one of the most popular places to visit in France for skiing.

Even if you're not planning to ski, it's well worth a visit.

You can take the Aiguille de Midi cable car for spectacular views of the mountains. Definitely one of the highest (and probably one of the most exhilarating - or scary, depending on which way you look at it) - cablecar rides you'll take!

8. Chateaux de la Loire
The Loire Valley, playground to royalty from the 15th through to the 18th centuries, boasts many beautiful renaissance chateaux.

There are several hundred castles in the Loire; some of the most popular are Château d´Amboise, Chambord, Chenonceau, Blois and Cheverny.

The Loire is also known for its fine wines too, and you can sample Muscadet, Sauvignon and many more.

Heading south, there are even more famous places in France.

9. Carcassonne
Carcassonne, in the Languedoc region, is Europe's largest walled city and one of the finest examples of medieval architecture.

Carcassonne's towers and pointed turrets look like they have come straight out of a fairy tale or Walt Disney movie. But there is no make believe here - it's all for real. Carcassonne is also one of the most most popular french monuments.

10. Lascaux
Some of the finest prehistoric art collections can be found in southwest france.

The ancient cave paintings, drawings and carvings that you can see here are truly awe inspiring, some dating as far back as 35,000 years.

The Lascaux sites (now a replica) are very popular tourist attractions in france, and there are many others too that are worth visiting.

And last but not least: french food and wine. Wherever you go, you will be able to try local specialties, whether this is bouillabaisse in Marseille, camembert in Normandy, or foie gras in the Perigord.

Famous Places in France - Top Ten Automata: Mechanical Wonders of the Nineteenth Century - bonus footage Video Clips. Duration : 2.48 Mins.

The history of automata parallels humanity's undiminished and continuous quest to create an object that has the appearance of moving like a human or an animal. The word is derived from the Greek automatos, meaning "self-moving." This exhibition of automata and mechanical tableaux offers a broad range of automaton production in France from the second half of the nineteenth century. They reflect the curiosities and preoccupations of French society at this time—an interest in exotic, foreign places, and a fascination with the clowns, artists, conjurers, musicians, and dancers that inhabited the streets and entertainment halls of Paris. Most are set in motion by a mechanical spring motor and possess a music box. The best makers of the era are represented: Lambert, Phalibois, Tharin, Renou, Roullet & Decamps, and Vichy. This exhibition was made possible through generous participation by the Morris Museum, Morristown, New Jersey. The museum's Murtogh D. Guinness Collection of Mechanical Musical Instruments and Automata, consisting of 750 objects plus over 4000 pieces of media, represents one of the most significant collections of its type in the country. Famous Castles in France Chateau De Chantilly

There are actually quite a few castles and chateaux situated around Paris and of course the most well known of these is the Chateau de Versailles, but we thought we would take a look at one of the lesser known palaces called the Chateau de Chantilly, which is also on a grand scale with phenomenal history and remarkable museums.

Not sure if you realised, but this was one of the settings for the James Bond film called A View to a Kill starring Roger Moore, along with other places in Paris that were in the film such as the Jules Verne restaurant at the Eiffel Tower and being only an hour away from Paris it has made this place popular with tourists.

Paris Musuem

But getting back to the chateau itself, it is a beautiful castle that is situated in one of the largest forests, with the estate covering an area of approximately 7,800 hectare, plus it has a park of around 155 hectares.

Famous Castles in France Chateau De Chantilly

From the Middle ages when construction started on this chateau, it passed via inheritance from person to person through different branches of the same family and each heir had improvements and new structures built. That is, until it came to the Conde family who eventually bequeathed the estate to the Duc d'Aumale, but this is where the legacy came to an end, as both his Son's had died in battle.

Because of this, the Duc d'Aumale bequeathed the entire estate of Chantilly to the Institut de France on the condition that it was opened to the public as a museum, which happened a year after his death and it is home to one of the finest museums of historical paintings in France called the Conde Museum. In fact, not including the famous Paris museum called The Louvre, it is the only museum in France to have three Raphael paintings.

Within the Chateau de Chantilly there are numerous rooms housing a wonderful collection of antiques, not just paintings, such as the Salon d'Orléans, which holds a rare collection of Chantilly porcelain, plus there are the private rooms from the Duc and Duchesse d'Aumale, known as the Petits Appartements, that you can view just as they were. You can also visit the Cabinet des Livres or book room, which is a magnificent library that contains around 30,000 volumes and also includes about 1,500 manuscripts including around 200 medieval manuscripts and the oldest one, which is the prized possession, actually dates from the 11th century.

Within the grounds of Chateau Chantilly that were designed by Andre le Notre there are the Grand Stables, which is where you will find the Musee Vivant du Cheval also known as The Living Horse Museum. The 31 rooms of the Musee Vivant du Cheval, spanning over a surface of 4,000 square metres and having an 800 metre track, this museum is one of the most visited equestrian places in the world, plus, they hold equestrian shows and demonstrations every day of the week except for Tuesday, which is when the whole of the Chantilly estate is closed.

You can admire the beautiful fountains and the canal, and the grounds are a great place for a stroll to watch the swans, birds nesting and lots of other wildlife. But also in the grounds there are other buildings such as a chapel and you can see the Jeu de Paume, which was a real tennis court and one of the last to be built in France when construction began in 1756, but this is now a museum room holding some very large paintings that would not fit anywhere else!

As previously mentioned Chateau de Chantilly is open every day except for a Tuesday, yet opens later in the evening during the summer months and to fully appreciate this incredible castle, you really need to make a point of spending a whole day out with all the family.

The Louvre Museum in Paris France

The Louvre was originally a royal palace that was built on the site of an old castle and added to by different Kings, but with the construction of Chateau de Versailles it became obsolete and was then turned into a museum back in the 1700's.

It was first given the name Musee Central des Arts, then it changed to the Musee Napoleon and from that changed its name again to the official title of Musee du Louvre, which is what it has been known as ever since, although is affectionately known as just The Louvre.

Paris Musuem

Being one of the oldest and largest museums, it is home to probably the most well-known painting in the world, the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci and has become the most famous and most visited art museum in the world with over 8 million visitors coming here every year.

The Louvre Museum in Paris France

In an easily accessible part of Paris located by the River Seine, The Louvre once again incorporates the beautiful Carrousel and the Tuileries Gardens that are a great place for a casual stroll, yet this means that it brings the museum outside with sculptures and statues from artists such as Aristide Maillol and Auguste Rodin.

Most people now find The Louvre recognisable by the large glass pyramid that is located in the central courtyard and this serves as the main entrance to this awe inspiring Paris museum, which is in alignment with the Champs-Elysees axis, but did you realise that it was only actually built in 1989! And it is from this point that tourists can access different temporary displays, the fascinating history of this world famous museum, along with the bookshop, Le Cafe Marly restaurant, etc, but also outside there is an equestrian statue of King Louis XIV.

Even if you are not a fan of art, you will still thoroughly enjoy your time at The Louvre, as it houses some very impressive collections, which include Egyptian, Roman and Greek artefacts, sculptures and other works of art that date back to the Middle Ages, right through to around 1850.

Realistically you need at least a day, or even more at The Louvre, as only allocating a few hours does not do the place justice, but it is extremely worthwhile obtaining a map of the place, as it is so vast you could end up missing exhibits you specifically wanted to see, especially if you have time restraints, yet do not be concerned that the exhibits are not all on one level as there are lifts to make them accessible to wheelchair users.

Obviously there is an entrance fee, but on the first Sunday of the month this and many other museums in Paris are completely free, however it also gets extremely busy, but arriving early and making a bee-line for famous exhibits like Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People, will ensure you get a good view before they get too crowded!

Yet when you need a well earned rest or need to refuel your body, then there is an enormous different choice of food on offer in the cafeterias and restaurants and incredibly, there are six different cafes and restaurants to choose from, that are open every day except for a Tuesday when the whole museum is also closed.

Whilst visiting The Louvre, do venture into the bookstore located in the Hall Napoleon under the glass pyramid and along with visitors guides available in more than ten different languages, it also stocks the largest selection of books on art history in France, plus has numerous other books, a children's section and even sells prints made up from the museums collection, with absolute thousands to choose from.

Now we quickly mentioned visitors guides, and if you are not fluent in the French language, then we would say that this is a must to fully appreciate the place, as many of the exhibit descriptions are not in any other language bar French, alternatively, if you plan your visit to the Musee du Louvre well in advance, you can have a guided tour that lasts about 2 hours and takes you round the most well known exhibits, leaving you to wander around the rest of this museum at your own leisure afterwards.

There will definitely be something of interest for everyone at The Louvre, including children, and it certainly lives up to its reputation of the best museum to visit when in Paris, but do bear in mind that it is closed every Tuesday and on national holidays, but is open from 9am to 6pm every other day and also has a late night opening on a Wednesday until 10pm.

The Louvre Museum in Paris France Caravaggio ( 1571 - 1610) Part One - paintings 1593 to 1600 Video Clips. Duration : 4.95 Mins.

Caravaggio was an Italian baroque painter who was the best exemplar of naturalistic painting in the early 17th century. His use of models from the lower classes of society in his early secular works and later religious compositions appealed to the Counter Reformation taste for realism, simplicity, and piety in art. Equally important is his introduction of dramatic light-and-dark effects - termed chiaroscuro - into his works. Originally named Michelangelo Merisi, Caravaggio was born September 28, 1573, in the Lombardy hill town of Caravaggio, from which his professional name is derived. He may have spent four years as apprentice to Simone Peterzano in Milan before going to Rome in 1593, where he entered the employ of the Mannerist painter Giuseppe Cesari, also known as the Cavaliere d'Arpino, for whom he executed fruit and flower pieces (now lost). Among his best-known early works are genre paintings (scenes from everyday life) with young men - for example, The Musicians (1591?-1592, Metropolitan Museum, New York City) - which were done for his first important patron, Cardinal Francesco del Monte. Scenes such as the Fortune Teller (1594, versions in the Louvre, Paris, and the Museo Capitolino, Rome) were especially appealing to the artist's followers. Caravaggio's mature manner commenced about 1600 with the commission to decorate the Contarelli Chapel in San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome with three scenes of the life of Saint Matthew. The Calling of Saint Matthew (1599?-1600 ...

France - Land of Natural Beauty

The beautiful lands of France have been an inspiration to many a traveler, poet, artist and writer. It is hardly surprising given that you find different types of climate and geography from the snow clad peaks of the Alps and Pyrenees to the sun swept and golden sands of Nice and St. Tropez. There is something to appeal to every sort of traveler coming to France.

This hexagonal shaped country lies in Western Europe and shares its borders with Germany, Spain, Italy and Switzerland among others. Climate-wise, there is a lot of variety but for the most part, most of France enjoys cool summers and mild to moderate winters. This of course will vary depending on the area, like the winters in the mountains of the Pyrenees will of course be far colder than most places whereas the warm weather in the French Riviera attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

Paris Musuem

Geographically speaking, France straddles a little over 670000 square kilometers of land. While there are mostly gently rolling hills and flat terrain in the North and West, the rest of the country is fairly mountainous. Now that we've have an idea of what France is from geographic and climatic perspective, let us take a look at some of the must-see and must-do things in this wonderful country:

Paris - Paree aah Paree, this City of Lights is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Paris has long been associated with lovers which also makes it one of the most sought after honeymoon destinations. The capital of France has some wonderful monuments and museums like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. This city is also a gastronomic delight having an abundance of eateries from the road side cafes to the Michelin rated fine dining restaurants where one can indulge in exotic foods like escargot (snails) and frogs' legs.

Wine Country - The South Western part of France features several regions (one of the more renowned ones being Bordeaux.) famous for producing different kinds of wine. The French love their wine so it will not come as a surprise that their wine regions produce everything from everyday table wine to super expensive sparkling wines. Speaking of sparkling wines, the region of Champagne is a must visit if only to taste genuine Champagne in the only place it is actually manufactured.

The French Riviera - This Mediterranean coastline area in the South East corner of France is actually called Cote d'Azur or the Blue Coast. Home to many of the most beautiful beaches and scenic views of the ocean, the French Riviera is a popular tourist center. 3of4 - #19 - Afshin Rattansi and Yvonne Ridley talk to: Tino Sehgal in New York talks about his latest work showing at the Guggenheim Museum of Art about the themes of progress and materialism. Tino Sehgal (born 1976) is a British-German artist based in Berlin. His works, which he calls "constructed situations",[1] involve one or more people carrying out instructions conceived by the artist. His father, a member of the Sehgal family, "had to flee from what is today Pakistan when he was a child, and he became a manager at IBM"[2]; his mother was "a German native and homemaker."[3] Sehgal was born in London but grew up mostly in Düsseldorf and Paris; he studied political economy and dance in Berlin and Essen and began to work as an artist in 2000. He has exhibited at a number of important venues including the Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Tate gallery, Manifesta 4 and the 2005 Venice Biennale. In 2006 he was shortlisted for the Hugo Boss Prize.[4] In 2008 the Nicola Trussardi Foundation has presented Tino Sehgals first major exhibition in Italy in the setting of Villa Reale, one of the most spectacular historic buildings in Milan. On the sale of his work, the artist stipulates that there is no written set of instructions, no written receipt, no catalogue and no pictures.[1] This means that his work is not documented in any way. (This mandate, however, has proven to be largely symbolic, and unenforceable.)[5] [edit]Works For This is New a museum attendant says out ...
